Summer is easing off. Do these before fall.

Clean up

Walk the beds. Pull dead leaves, spent flowers, and anything diseased so it doesn't spread.

Prune

Cut back overgrown stems. Check how that plant wants to be pruned before you start.

Water

It's still hot, but you can water less often. Water deep, then let the soil dry a bit.

Fertilize

A slow-release fertilizer helps plants recover from summer. Follow the bag.

Weeds

Pull weeds before they seed. Mulch helps keep the next round down.

Plant for fall

Lettuce, spinach, and broccoli can go in now. So can flowers and shrubs that handle our heat and rain.
